Conservation

Each book has its own history. A volume may be kept in a collection, read out loud at church or temple services, written in by a dedicated reader, or stored, neglected, in the basement of somebody’s home. Paper and leather—a rare book’s primary components— are susceptible to damage from the surrounding environment as well as too much handling.

The Rare Bible Collection @ MOBIA is a historical collection. Our conservator’s goals include preserving the information the book contains so that it is available for future generations of readers as well as conserving the volume in its original form. A Bible’s materials, binding and decorative s style, typography, illustration processes, and paper all offer insight into its history and use. Our conservator takes care to preserve the rare Bibles, ensuring their legacy as well.
